Some History on The Pink Thing is indeed a legendary barra fly, designed specifically to catch barramundi. After years of persistence, Darwin’s Graham White, the mastermind behind this fly, finally shared its story. Let me take you through it!
In the early 1980s, a group of flyrodders in Darwin, known as The Saltwater Flyrodders of the Northern Territory, would gather at Fishers Lagoon on the Howard River floodplains for fishing outings. On designated Fly Rod Days, they met back at Graeme Forrester’s place for a few beers. However, there was a catch: anyone using tackle other than fly rods had to pay a fine of one carton of green cans (which were promptly consumed by the group). Lou Murray and Les Bullard once arrived late, having fished another lagoon without success. Hot and discouraged, Lou decided to take matters into his own hands. He grabbed a baitcaster, rigged it with a pearlescent white jig featuring a long worm tail and a pink collar, and cast it out. The result? Three barra caught in quick succession! Lou left early that day without paying the fine, and something needed to be done.
That night, Graham White retrieved an identical jig from his car and sat down at the vice. He combined elements from his favorite flies—the Given’s and the Deceiver—to create a new pattern. By 2 am, he had tied what would become The Pink Thing. Its first outing was at Shady Camp Rockbar, where the barra showed interest. Alex Julius also tried it, and although the initial results were similar to other flies, things changed when he used it at Shady a month later. The barra couldn’t resist it. Graham found success with it at creek mouths along the Daly River, slotting it neatly into his fishing system:
- Dirty Water: Given’s Barred and Black
- Stained Water: The Pink Thing
And yet, the fly remained nameless until Lou Murray stepped in again. During a fishing trip to the Blue Holes on North West Vernon Island, they were ostensibly chasing big tarpon but were really after anything that moved. So, next time you’re out chasing barramundi, consider tying on this iconic fly and see if it lives up to its legendary reputation!
