This fly is a Tasmanian adaptation of the renowned English fly, the "Bristol Hopper." The fly was introduced to Australia years ago by John Horsey, a prominent figure in lake fishing who visited the country to conduct several fishing courses. John, often regarded as the best lake angler globally, played a significant role in enhancing our lake fishing techniques, particularly from a drifting boat.
Bristol Hoppers are among my top choices for still water fishing, largely because their "low riding" nature makes them effective at attracting trout. However, this same quality makes them difficult to see, which can be problematic for guides whose clients often struggle to spot their flies. To address this, a possum wing has been added for better floatation, along with an orange hackle for improved visibility. This combination makes the fly highly visible and hard for trout to resist, as the hackle also serves as an attractor.
This fly excels in bright, windy conditions, making it ideal for "shark" fishing in Great Lake or blind fishing along the edges and shorelines of Tasmania’s clear lakes during summer. It performs exceptionally well when gum beetles are present. Additionally, it is an excellent choice for fishing in the western lakes, and if you have trouble seeing your fly, this will be a valuable addition to your collection.
