Backing Lines
Fly line backing is the first section of the line, which serves two purposes. 1. It adds line to your arbor (the part of the Reel that holds the line), which makes it easier to reel in your fly line and additionally adds weight to your reel which helps with rod balance and provides for longer casts. 2. It also provides additional length for when fish make longer runs. A typical fly line is about 90′, so if a fish decides to run further than that, backing gives you the extra length.
